Mediterranean cruise in August 2019. My sixth cruise, the very first cruise for my partner who was a little sceptical about cruising. No more ! He is completely smitten and we have already booked for 2020 and 2021.
The flights were with BA and part of the package, Heathrow to Athens outbound and Rome to Heathrow coming back. First time I’ve ever flown with BA and I was excited about it, but there really wasn’t anything premium, special or different about BA from any budget airlines I’ve flown with. We landed at Athens airport and the transfer organisation was a bit haphazard. Once we reached Piraeus though, everything changed. Princess check in was rapid and efficient, the Emerald Princess and all the staff we met on board for the 14 nights were fantastic, the food in the restaurants was delicious and the choices wide. The theatre shows were great and we visited some beautiful ports starting with Santorini. Kotor was breathtaking, Messina underwhelming ( not sure why it is a cruise port, little to see) , Naples gave us the chance to visit Pompei, Barcelona was unforgettable due to Sagrada Familia where we both cried it was so beautiful, Gibraltar was good fun - the caves are highly recommended, Marseille was beautiful, especially the trip up to Notre Dame, Genoa was elegant, Pisa and Florence were a fabulous way to end the cruise. The Emerald Princess is a very big ship, but it really didn’t feel like it as there were no queues, no crowds, and we only had to wait for a dining table in the evening a couple of times ( we chose the anytime dining option). We booked onboard for 2021 and got a good deal plus onboard credit.  Would we do it all again ? Yes - in a heartbeat .
