Annual/regular holiday

Cruise Elements:

Quality of Food:
We loved trying all the different local fish on offer.... and the cheeses... just beware of the brown cheese as it isn't to everyone's palette!
Entertainment:
The entertainment is minimal - some live music in the bar, talks/lectures and book readings.
Shore Excursions:
Best shore excursion was the midnight concert at the cathedral in Tromso The worst shore excursion was the saltstrumen rapids near Bodo. A long trip in the coach to see literally nothing! Wrong time of the day/night to see them (tide dependent)
Staff:
The staff on the excursions desk were extremely helpful about whether my physical ability was sufficient for the trips i wanted to do.
Cabins:
Basic inside cabin - perfectly functional. clean and acceptable.
Having seen the Northern Lights before - twice - I booked another cruise with the Hurtigruten. We travelled to Norway and started at Trondheim, having spent a couple of days in the town first, and ended in Tromso after cruising over the North Cape and back. We consider ourselves extremely lucky - as we saw the Northern Lights every night-time bar the first night! The alarm calls from the captain into the cabins were superb! Many times we were already outside watching them, but the back-up of knowing that the captain would alert you if they were seen was exceptional. All the food on board was gorgeous. There was a well laid out and stocked breakfast catering for all tastes hot food, cold food, porridge, meats/cheese and of course fish! Lunches were also a great treat of different choices buffet-style. Dinners were a set meal made with local produce and a real treat for the taste buds! The staff were all welcoming and helpful from the receptionist and check-in process, through to all the waiting staff and bar staff, to the occasional chef and maintenance engineers. And the tours, although expensive, were in the most part very worthwhile. All the staff on the counter on the boat (where you can book tours) were very helpful in assisting with the choices of the day and what walking ability you needed to enjoy the trips. The inside cabin was basic, but perfectly adequate considering all you were doing was sleeping in there! Entertainment was minimal which is why I booked this style of cruise! Music in the evening a couple of nights, poetry / book excerpt readings, talks about the oil industry or wildlife, and outside on deck frivolities! Would I recommend the trip and the Hurtigruten? Most definitely! I am aware we were extremely lucky to see the NL six nights in a row, but... even once... just once... and the trip was worth it :)
