Chasing the northern lights
We have recently returned from a Hurtigruten cruise from Bergen to Kirkenes and back in the hope of seeing the Northern Lights (we did, but they were not the only highlight of our holiday). This is not a traditional type cruise but a working ferry which stops at numerous ports on its journey for passengers, deliveries of post and goods and often for no more than 15 minutes. If you want evening entertainment, non-stop activities and a luxurious cabin with branded toiletries, this is not the cruise for you. However, if you want stunning scenery, interesting lectures and some fascinating ports of call, to say nothing of good food (and plenty of it) then why not try this voyage for a change of pace? We enjoyed the most wonderful sunsets and sunrises, with more daylight hours than we had anticipated bearing in mind that we were travelling late January/early February, and we were also were fortunate enough to enjoy clear skies by night and sunshine by day, along with calm waters. We saw the lunar eclipse in all its magnificent glory. We visited some wonderful places including Bergen, Alesund, Trondheim, Tromso and Kirkenes (a personal favourite) to say nothing of smaller ports where we strolled around for an hour or so under our own steam rather than on an organised trip. We found that members of the expedition team were both knowledgeable and entertaining (to say nothing of multi-lingual!). We are now thinking of returning to see the midnight sun in the hope of enjoying even more unusual trips and places as the summer timetable and activities are very different from the winter schedule. This was one of our most enjoyable and memorable holidays and although not a traditional cruise, it is one that we would recommend to anyone with a sense of adventure.
