Hurtigruten - Northern Lights
We have just returned from an eleven night Norwegian Voyage with Hurtigruten along the coast line of Norway on the Kong Harold a working ship that takes passengers, post and cargo stopping at 34 ports starting at Bergen and travelling as far north as Kirkeness 10km short of the Russian border and back to Bergen. There is no glitz or glamour of evening entertainment, but the in board expedition team provide interesting and informative lectures. The food was the best we have ever had on any cruise line and plenty of choices of fresh fish. The Alcohol was very expensive but it is anywhere in Norway due to government controls and taxes. Hurtigruten are well worth considering if you want something slightly more adventurous than a standard cruise and provide plenty of excursion options from husky sledging, mid night concerts in a Cathedral, escorted hikes to name but a few. The ships crew and the expedition team notify you of any sightings of the Northern lights throughout the cruise. The cabins are in the smallish size but practical and functional. Breakfast and lunch is buffet style with an excellent choice of hot and cold dishes with a good varied choice of fish. Dinner is waiter served. There are plenty of viewing areas both inside and outside with electric heaters during the winter months. Some of the port stops are of a short stay and others linger allowing you to explore the many towns visited. The scenery is absolutely spectacular. On our particular voyage there were only 290 passengers which made the voyage even more friendly with a good mix of nationalities. The ship was not particularly big and I was able to navigate around the ship without getting lost within a couple of days, which I have never been able to achieve on other cruises. A thoroughly enjoyable experience. .
