Another adventure

We have been on numerous cruises, cruising with different cruise lines, but this was the first cruise we had had with Holland America. Our cruise was on the Zaandam for the 14 day South America Passage, in a cabin with a balcony. The cabin was spacious enough (on par with others we have been in) containing not only the bed and dressing table but a setee and chair also - plenty of room to move about. The bathroom was one of the most spacious - not just a shower, but an actual bath - and a jacuzzi at that!
The crew were delightful, especially our cabin steward- nothing was too much trouble. He came to tell us when he was going off duty and check if we should need anything while he was away. Likewise the waiters in the dining room and the sommelier were equally as attentive. The food was good, but the choice not as varied as we are used to; and surprisingly if steak or lobster were desired there was an extra charge. However, whatever was ordered was plentiful as the waiter would always get extra - even when not asked. it is impossible to be hungry on board anyway as there always seems to be food on offer somewhere on the ship. We did think the price of the wine was extortionately expensive, though.
A few mornings we ordered breakfast in the cabin, and it was good to be able to choose a hot cooked breakfast - but again the choice was not that good and we found that what we would like were bits from different menu choices that couldn't be mixed. Orders always came promptly, with a smile.
There was a small library and games room, combined. We found a board game we liked to play once, but thereafter it appeared to disappear. Maybe there should be some rules about not removing games to cabins; but we assume that if folks think they can borrow books then they also thought they could borrow the games that were in the same room.
Entertainment in the theatre was of a good standard. We thoroughly enjoyed the musical and comedy acts.
Our one disappointment was the shopping facility. Most of the shopping space was taken up with very expensive jewellery; with not much else to look at.
Due to bad weather we could not sail around the Horn, but the Captain kept us fully informed; both over the tannoy system and by calling a meeting of all passengers. This was much appreciated; especially his obvious concern for passengers and ship. Our rerouting caused us to spot great wildlife - magellan penguins, whales, dolphins, sealions, etc swimming passed the ship.
Trips organised were plentiful, although again appeared expensive. However, they were well organised. The Falkland Islands were particularly good, Bluff Cove is a must. Great sightings of King and Gentoo penguins and then super tea and scones/cakes in the cafe -all part of the trip.
We had an enjoyable cruise; but be aware that the service charges are two tier. We were in a cabin that just came into the top tier and we did think that they were a bit hefty. We could change the amount, in fact if wanted the charges could have been removed completely and we could have tipped individual crew members. Nice to know that there are options, if you enquire.
