Onboard Activities:
Boarding at Southampton’s QE2 terminal was seamless, from drop off to lunch in the Thistle restaurant was less than 15 minutes. We’ve cruised many times but never before with Fred Olsen, first impressions were positive with a friendly welcome, clean public areas and excellent buffet lunch. Access to the cabins was early. Our cabin was a superior ocean view with large picture window situated aft on Deck 4, very convenient for all restaurants, Coral bar and the gym. The cabin, which l believe had been recently refurbished, was spacious though a little lacking in storage space compounded by the tea/coffee making facilities being inside one of the hanging cupboards. There is some background noise but it’s not too intrusive. There is a free, key operated, safe but be warned, it’s really small and won’t take much more than passports and phone. There is a quality tv with the usual multi-service capabilities. Overall we were impressed with the cabin which was kept immaculately clean by the charming Mahou.

The highlights for us were the friendliness of all the crew and staff members, always smiling, helpful and welcoming. They work really hard to ensure you have a memorable holiday; the food, some of the best we’ve experienced on any cruise wether it’s in the main restaurants or in the self-service, we enjoyed everything; the drinks, these are reasonably priced with good quality cocktails. We don’t drink much so didn’t bother with the drinks package at £19 if pre-booked but £29 onboard; finally, or fellow guests, we met some wonderful and inspirational people, still living life to the max in their 80’s!

We enjoyed all the ports of call and were able to walk off the ship into town at everyone. Our first time in Funchal, the cable car and botanical gardens are recommended. Entertainment on board was varied in both type and quality. The Neptune lounge is quite small making for an intimate venue for some acts and a bit restrictive for the larger productions. Coral Club provides some lively late night entertainment. The Observatory is a quiet venue with a pianist in the evening, a favourite for a pre-dinner drink.

Smoking appears to be restricted to a couple of areas at the back of the ship and is less obtrusive than on several others ships we’ve been on.

Overall we really enjoyed Fred Olsen and look forward to our next cruise with them.
