Review Profile

Times cruised before:
January, 2022
Embarkation, including COVID testing, was speedy and well organised.  Cabin was well appointed with everything expected and steward made himself known to us straightaway. A small section of accommodation is sealed off for infection control if required but every other service was provided in full. The Occupancy on this cruise was only about 65% therefore no crowding was experienced anywhere. Masks must be worn when moving through the ship, when dancing, and when seated in the theatre but may be removed when seated in bars and restaurants and when in open air.
The drinks package is expensive at 69 dollars per person per day and one would need to drink excessively to get the full value so we declined. You can purchase wine selections which provide a selection of quality wines at discounted price and this was more in keeping with our expectations. There is a good range of beers and spirits and bar service was prompt from pleasant and enthusiastic wait staff.  The food on board was of good quality with generous portions and buffet service was very well controlled with closely supervised COVID precautions being evident in all aspects. We did feel that there was perhaps less choice than we experienced before 2020 however standards of presentation and service are still high.
Entertainment was typically Cunard with ballroom dancing supported by a skilled orchestra and there were a number of singing duo’s including a talented Irish folk duo and 2 duo’s who were pretty average on their own but when they combined they provided a lively and welcome alternative to the orchestra for less formal dancing. There were 2 pianists and 2 classical guitarists who provided easy listening music in the bars and lounges. Theatre entertainment consisted of the usual production shows, a female vocalist, and another female musician who was highly skilled in a number of instruments and produced a fast paced show supported by the orchestra. Not many cruise comedians can make me laugh these days but Jeff Stevenson did with his highly vocal and fast paced gags. A quartet of young men, the Four D’s, provided 2 evenings of songs of the 60’s to 20’s. Insight lectures were informative and well presented by experts on the ports visited, whales and dolphins, and the effects of kidnapping and incarceration from his own experience delivered by John McCarthy.
We didn’t use shore excursions but never heard anything bad about their organisation or quality. The Spanish ports visited appeared to be in a semi locked down state with many shops shuttered and obviously some had suffered complete closure, and only a few people were in the streets. Mask wearing every where, even in the open air is the norm which may also be a contributing factor. Madeira, on the other hand, was lively and bustling and appeared the same as pre 2020 except mask wearing in all public areas is required.
The weather was kind once we got south of mainland Spain and much time was spent sun worshipping on the pool decksThe outward journey across Biscay was in a Force 9 and this induced an annoying corkscrew motion in the ship which required much physical effort to counteract it therefore tiredness set in and the only sensible thing to do was settle down to the tv or a good book. The return journey was almost a flat calm and full use could be made of the outdoor activities.
This was a good cruise overall however if a criticism has to be made I will direct it at the cost of internet WiFi packages. Many cruise lines are now providing this as standard and Cunard should do the same, especially in the ever changing world of travel where lengthy form filling online is becoming a norm to access entry into some countries, sometimes at very short notice.
Would I cruise Cunard again, yes, but it may not be for everyone however I fit the average Cunard client demographic.
