Our first 6 star cruise.
We have been lucky enough to have been able to cruise quite often these past few years. We like the facilities of a larger ship, but like the more personal service of a smaller one so for the past few years either stay in the Haven on NCL, or the Yacht Club on MSC. We decided to try a six star line and Crystal had a wonderful cruise sailing out of New York at the right time so we went for it. I was worried about being on a smaller ship but the reviews were good. Embarkation was a doddle, there was a queue but the staff at the cruise terminal were brilliant. It took about 15 minutes to get through security. After that Crystal's 3 second rule (our making) came into force. Our Cabin was ready early, it was the size of a normal balcony cabin, a large bed, a settee and sitting area, but the balcony was a tad bigger and the wardrobes were Tardis like, so much room. The bathroom had a bath with shower over, 2 basins, and a first on any cruise line, full size luxury toileteries. As well as the lovely fluffy bathrobes we had lighter dressing gowns. The mini bar was stocked with whatever we wanted. Beer, spirits or wine, we just had to tell our cabin stewart. Water bottles were also left in the cabin, all included in the price. We also had the option of fruit baskets of our choice daily. The entertainment on board was OK, a really good cruise director, his personal show was abysmal in my opinion, a really nice guy though. The food on board was wonderful wether eating in the buffet, main dining room or speciality restaurants. All guests on Crystal can dine in the Pay For Restaurants at least once for free of charge. No need to pay though, the food and service in the main dining areas were superb. We looked forward to seeing our waiters most nights. The buffet was amazing and the best out of about the 10 cruise lines we have sailed with. We had a pre-dinner drink in the connoisseur bar nearly every night, that is where the 3 second rule came in, what wonderful service, and not a tip in sight. The only down-side for me was the casino and entertainment, not a lot going on there. We met a lot of great people on this cruise, I was a little worried about 'snottiness', no need., our fellow guests were really friendly. The itinerary was superb, New york to Canada, the service was the best of any line I have cruised with. I would sail Crystal again any time. Crystal Serenity was a truly beautiful ship and the service was wonderful. The ports we visited were OK although small. It was great eating lobster at lunch . I never do ships excursions but perhaps I should have this cruise. At breakfast in the post cruise hotel in Montreal it was mentioned by our table companions that the service on board was akin to the service they had on Cunard 40 years ago.
