Had a wonderful 2 weeks travelling around New Zealand having set off from Sydney.
It took 2 days to get there. A nice relaxing start to our adventure.
Such an interesting and diverse country.
Something for everyone from Hobbiton movie adventure to vibrant city culture of Auckland and many interesting things in between.
However, there are a lot of road and building works going on around the port in Auckland so allow extra time to get to things like hop on/off bus which has had to be moved a 10 minute walk away from the usual stop.
From Akaroa we took a shuttle bus to Christchurch which was an eye opener. There’s still lots of unrepaired damage from the last earthquake and shows how vulnerable we all can be.
Dunedin was another little gem. Lots of references to its Scottish ancestry. The beautiful station is well worth a visit with the longest platform in the country!!
Hobbiton movie set adventure is a must. You can immerse yourself in the moment and just imagine you’re part of the film..and, you get a free pint of beer or cider in the Green Dragon pub at the end of the tour.
Travelling around the ‘sounds’ was also amazing..took a whole day visiting the 3, Dusky, Doubtful and Milford. The views were brilliant and there were so many photo opportunities.
The Bay of Islands, our last port of call in the north, was probably our favourite.
We took a small lunch cruise around the bay and were lucky enough to have a pod of dolphins following us for a while.
On dry land there is also plenty to do with several small towns to explore. I recommend Russell which is so laid back and friendly and just a 20 minute ferry ride from where your tender boat will dock.
It’s a long way to go from the UK, but, if you possibly can ... just go...
