Overall we enjoyed our cruise on the Millennium.
We chose the SE Asia itinerary as it was an area of the world we were unfamiliar with. We spent five nights in Cambodia, exploring the temples around Siem Reap, before arriving in Singapore the day before our cruise. We treated ourselves to a night at The Marina Bay Sands Hotel which was a lovely way to start the cruise part of our holiday.
On entering the ship, we were pleased with the refit in the communal areas and in our cabin. The storage was much better in our balcony cabin than we experienced last time on The Eclipse and the overall decor was much more modern. The one thing we weren't happy with in the cabin was the sofa which wasn't wide enough for the two of us to sit on at the same time.
It was nice to have another night in Singapore as the ship didn't leave until the following day. We really enjoyed Singapore, particularly The Gardens at Marina Bay- spectacular during the day and at night!
For our first port of call- Kota Kinabalu- we got a taxi to the tourist office in town, collected a map and asked for suggestions of places to see. They were all quite low key, but we particularly enjoyed looking around the markets and trying some local food. We were able to walk back to the ship from the town.
The next port- Boracay- was one of our favourites. We caught a tricycle taxi to the main beach and took an island hopping tour. The island and surrounding waters were very busy and the tour didn't quite turn out as expected but the day was special because we were on a boat with some Filipinos who were just delightful. The highlight was when eight of us were squeezed onto a motorbike with sidecar to go and get some lunch!
The next port- Manila- was disappointing. We walked to the old part of the city- Intramuros- and visited Santiago Fort, Casa Manila and the cathedral. Each was interesting but the traffic and associated fumes and noise made it quite unpleasant to walk around and crossing the road was terrifying!
The next port- Hong Kong- was fascinating. We loved the mixture of Western and Eastern cultures. The transit system was very easy to use. The highlight was taking the tram to Victoria Peak and looking over the city. Wow!
The next port- Nha Trang- is a beach resort. We chose not to get off the ship and relax onboard.
The final port- Ho Chi Minh City. This was the only time we took a ship excursion as it takes 90 minutes to get from the port to the city. The tour visited the highlights of the city which we enjoyed.
Now, the big negative in our experience. We love our food and wine. We felt that the standard of food in the main dining room has deteriorated since our trip on Eclipse in November 2018. The portions were smaller and often the food was not flavoured sufficiently. We thought about visiting the speciality restaurants but the cost was laughable. But the biggest issue was the wine. We had upgraded from a Classic package to a Premium package; we like to be able to choose, by the glass, which wine to drink with our meal but time and again the premium wines were not available and we had to choose the wines in the Classic package. Also, a high percentage of the wines included in both packages were American. American wines are not to our taste and, I would argue, are not to the British taste- you don't see many wines from the US in UK supermarkets. We felt that we had been mis-sold the Premium package and were suspicious that some of the wines were being kept for the speciality restaurants. My husband also found that a number of the beers in the Premium package were unavailable, and with both the wines and beers it was hard to establish at any particular bar/ dining room which wines/ beers were available. We will be looking carefully at the drinks packages that the different cruise lines offer when we book our next cruise.
