Excellent river cruise
Avalon Impression was our first river cruise, and from the experience we enjoyed on her, I think we will river cruise again. Our journey was Amsterdam to Budapest via the Rhine, Main Canal and the Danube. Embarkation was smooth after a brief stop at a central hotel, near enough for us to walk into the city whilst awaiting the time to board. As soon as we boarded, we knew we on a very high class ship. Understated, but classy decor said it all. Our cabin had a hugh, superb french balcony that had a 3 panelled sliding door that went the full width of the outer wall, affording a large opening on the passing scenery. The bathroom was larger than the one's we have had on ocean cruises, with special mention going to the spacious, glass doored, walk in shower. No sticky curtain. Price included gratuities, guided walking tours and wine, beer or soft drinks with meals. The meals were outstanding. Never had such quality and variety on a cruise, and we have been on numerous 5* ocean cruises so have no hesitation in rating the food on Avalon Impression as the best we have ever had on a ship. Crew were first class, from the Captain who was usually by the gangplank to welcome you back, via Henrietta who cared for our cabin, via the waiters and receptionists, to Robert the cruise director. The guides on the walking tours were all very good. Evening entertainment was either of local talent or the resident musician. There were beer tastings in Regensberg, and further tastings of 50% alcohol fruit brandys in Budapest. Lost my sense of taste after the second one! Optional extra excursions were available at some stops. The 138 passengers were about 40 Brits and the remainder were Australians, Americans and a few New Zealanders. A very congenial group, who mixed well making for a very enjoyable time. I could write a book about how good were our 15 days on Avalon Impression. An upmarket, first class ship that we have no hesitation to highly recommend.
