Amadeus Advent Trip
This was our second trip with Amadeus Line, an Advent cruise from Basel to Cologne with stops on the way at Strasbourg, Speyer, Mannheim, Rudesheim, and Koblenz to visit the Christmas markets. In most places it was an easy walk in to town from where the ship docked, but there were plenty of organised trips too if required. We made our own travel arrangements to board the ship, it's very easy with Eurostar from the UK, and spending the night before departure in a Basel hotel gave us extra time to visit the city. We had a good sized cabin on Strauss deck with a French balcony window which must be good during the warmer months. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was a good size, and the housekeeping was to a high standard. Breakfast was a buffet with plenty of choice, plus eggs cooked to order. Lunch was self service for salad and soup, then you ordered from the menu for main and desert. Dinner was served with complimentary wine, and was all waiter service. There wasn't a huge choice of dishes, but the food was to a high standard and well presented. Entertainment was low key, port talks, quizzes and piano music or a singer, but bar prices were fair and we never felt at a loss for something to do. There was a cosy lounge at the rear of the ship where the 24 hour hot drinks machine was located, and this was a favorite spot of ours for a coffee and a chat when returning from shore. All the staff were very friendly, nothing seemed too much trouble, and the only problem we had during our trip was our taxi not turning up when we left. If you're looking for a river cruise then I highly recommend Amadeus line. Their Advent trips are well priced, and in my opinion a good introduction to river cruising.
