Amawaterways Rhine Cruise - Poor Customer Relation
When we arrived at Amsterdam Airport the promised AMA desk was not there and there was nobody to meet us. As we did not know the location of the boat we could not simply take a taxi. We waited and waited and it was only after calling back to the U.K. that a driver appeared after 80 minutes and no little stress. AMA's "compensation" was $25 credit in a cruise costing near $4,000. - and this after consultation with Head Office in Los Angeles. They lost our goodwill. Now to the cruise itself which we enjoyed. We were lucky to have wall to wall sunshine for the entire week . The itinerary was great. We visited beautiful old German towns and sailed past numerous old castles on rising ground overlooking the river. Highlights were going through the Rhine Gorge - a sail of 4/5 hours - and tours of Heidelberg and Strasburg. The boat itself was comfortable and our cabin adequate with a tiny balcony and a really good shower. Sometimes if the boat was using a lot of power at night there was a creaking noise in the ceiling which woke us up. Food was good but not outstanding. Breakfast was the weakest link. How does river cruising compare with ocean cruising ? River cruise prices are close to what six star lines like Seabourn charge. The river boats do not compete with the cruise lines in terms of luxury or the overall cruise experience. However if penetrating into the heart of Europe and docking yards from the Cathedral is what you want, then river cruising is for you. Our transfer for the flight home from Basel was not until 4.00 p.m. AMA allowed us and other guests to stay on board until then and gave us lunch. With this we were impressed.
