£2m Cocaine seized on the Marco Polo

Well I suppose it had to happen sooner or later. That someone would attempt to smuggle drugs on a cruise ship. You hear it all the time at airports and the coast guard stop searching some vessels at sea but never before on a cruise ship. And a Cruise and Maritime one at that! Yes, The Marco Polo is now famous for hitting the papers of having drug smugglers aboard. Unfortunately we can’t claim to fame that we booked these particular passengers, however I did have some of my passengers booked on the very sailing and they told me often saw them at breakfast and well you just wouldn’t think anyone at breakfast would be carrying £2m worth of cocaine in the bottom of their suitcase! Wow!

The couple now names as Mr & Mrs Clarke who used to live in Manchester are apparently regular cruisers and take several trips each year. It makes you wonder if they’ve done this before and how many times. According to the press it’s not clear if the drugs were U.K bound or going into Europe. They do live in the Costa Del Sol, Spain.

What I can’t get my head round is their age. Both are pensioners at 70 & 72 and I just think to myself you go to jail now and it’s your life over. They’re not young where they may do a few years and possibly learn from their mistake and redeem themselves later in life. They’re towards the later stages of life, it just doesn’t make sense. Of course, it could be to fund their lavish lifestyle and to cruise a few times a year and live overseas or could they have been coerced into doing such a crime? I think it’s obvious they collected the drugs from a Caribbean island, not known which one but I’m sure the police will do their investigations and find out. It has to be one of the worst crimes you can do. It ruins a lot of lives and this couple should be fortunate they were arrested in Europe as some countries like in Asia carry a much firmer sentence like the death penalty. I shall keep an eye on this story and see what happens. Were you on board too, did you meet the couple? Let me know if you were on this sailing and if you saw them around the ship or even socialised with them. The couple are being held in local jails. It’ll be interesting to see what happens to them and if and when the truth unfolds.
