Fred Olsen’s Braemar Is A Record Breaker!!!

Last Wednesday Fred Olen’s MS Braemar became the largest cruise or sailing vessel to pass through the Corinth canal in Greece. The 643 feet long vessel which can carry more than 1,200 passengers and crew on board measures 72 feet wide (22 metres) wide. At it’s narrowest the Corinth canal is only 78 feet (24 metres) wide which meant people on board the MS Braemar cruise ship could physically reach out and touch the sides of the canal walls.

The cruise ship at 24,344-tonne ship is owned by UK-based Fred Olsen Cruise Lines and  is currently sailing on a sold-out 25-night ‘Corinth Canal & Greek Islands’ cruise was assisted by a tugboat to guide it into the correct position. The four-mile long Corinth Canal separates mainland Greece from the Peloponnesian Peninsula and connects the Corinthian and Saronic Gulfs. The canal which took 13 years to construct from 1880 to 1893.  At 6.3km (3.9 miles) long, the Corinth Canal shortens the sea route from Italian ports to the port of Athens and enables ships in the Aegan Sea travelling to the Adriatic to cut off 185 nautical miles to their journey.

Clare Ward from Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines in a statement announced: “This is such an exciting sailing and tremendous milestone in Fred Olsen’s 171-year history and we are thrilled to have been able to share it with our guests.“At Fred Olsen, we strive to create memories that last a lifetime, and with guests on board Braemar able to get so close to the edges of the Corinth Canal that they could almost touch the sides, we know that this will be a holiday that they will never forget.

Have you sailed or would you like the opportunity to sail through the Corinth canal?
