Northern lights

I love an adventure, so if I could pick any cruise to go on right now it would be to go in search of the Northern lights. It is a cruise that has fascinated me for some time now and is pretty high on my to do list. To be quite honest until I came into the cruising world I’d never really even heard of the Northern lights.

I always get excited when I  book people on this adventure and really wish it was me going instead, so the nearest experience I’ve actually got to doing it myself is hearing about my passengers experiences when they return and cheekily ask them to send me some great pictures.

Here’s a taster from last year from a good past passenger of mine, I’m hoping this year will have been just as good.

So what are the Northern lights and why do they happen.

The Northern lights are a spectacular colourful light display which appears across the sky in the Northern hemisphere. They are known as ‘Aurora borealis’. The bright dancing lights of the aurora are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth’s atmosphere. The lights are seen above the magnetic pole of the northern hemispheres.
Auroral displays appear in many colours although pale green and pink are the most common. Shades of red, yellow, green, blue, and violet have been reported. The lights appear in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, rippling curtains or shooting rays that light up the sky with an eerie glow.

Fred Olsen do some great Northern lights expeditions, if you share my passion for the Northern lights and fancy an adventure of a lifetime give me a call to book. Also if you are lucky enough to have experienced the Northern lights already and have any good footage or pictures please send them onto me to share with fellow passengers.
