Big Tourism in Little China

Now i’m sure this is one of the Seven Wonders of the World that will be on most peoples Bucket List. It is definitely on mine and Jonathan’s. Some of you may have done The Great Wall of China already and i personally would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

There might be a few of you out there that have seen a lot more of it than others, or more than some tourists would have been shown. As the Wall itself stretches 13,171 miles, it covers so much ground including deserts, forests, snow-capped mountains and lakes. Here are some unexpected views of the Great Wall of China that everyone should see.

Many sections of the wall are just ruins –

The Ming Dynasty was overthrown in 1644 which meant no further work was done on the Wall. Some has just been restored for Tourism purposes. Many sections of the Great Wall have fallen into disrepair over the centuries with only the main tourist spots receiving regular upkeep, meaning The Great Wall we see today is not the version that was seen back when it was first built.

Other sections mark their way over Mountains –

Fun Fact: The Great Wall of China has never been listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World although is sometimes included in the Seven Wonders of the Medieval World.

Have you seen the Great Wall covered in Snow? –

What with all those Mountains the Wall is bound to get covered in some snow. the highest point is just outside of Beijing on Mt Heita at 5033 feet above sea level.

Even Desert Terrain –

The sheer size of the country means that over its 13,000 mile length, the wall has to go through a lot of varying terrain.

Not so fun fact: It’s still predicted that several parts of the Great Wall will vanish before 2040! Natural weather and human erosion have put parts of the wall in jeopardy so get out there and enjoy it while you can.

The Wall continues right through the Forests –

The Wall has been around for so long now that, in parts of it, forests have grown on either side of it with some of the trees towering over the Wall itself. another unexpected feature would be the glutinous rice! The rice’s sticky nature has helped in the Wall’s strength and endurance.

Not forgetting the Lakes –

The Great Wall is not a continuous line. There are side walls, circular walls, parallel walls, and sections with no wall (the high mountains or rivers form a barrier instead).

Fun fact: The Wall crosses 9 provinces and municipalities: Liaoning, Hebei, Tianjin, Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Gansu!

The Urban Legend –

I’m afraid it’s not true, the Great Wall can not be seen from outer space. You can barely make out China from space never mind the Wall.
