My Favourite Landmarks

Each City will have its own and I can’t imagine anyone in the World will ever see them all but we all will have our own ideas on what is a Landmark for ourselves.  You don’t have to travel too far to come across any of these beauties, the chances are you will have something local to you, here in Swindon I may struggle although everyone knows about our Magic Roundabout!  Which reminds me on driving round the Arc D’Triomphe – not a task you take lightly I promise you.  You can send me photos of yours – they may be more infamous than famous 🙂

In the grand scheme of things I have seen very few, surprising really as I am in travel but these things are not always on your immediate list when looking at or booking your holiday.  I look back over the years and see the missed opportunities I rarely return anywhere as there is a whole world to see but maybe I should see it all again and look at it all differently.

On my visit to Paris, in my mind I wanted to walk the old streets, grab a coffee and people watch but once  there, you gravitate towards the main sights and spent less time doing what was planned, not a bad thing but it shows you have to  go anywhere with an open mind and see what you while you are there.

Popular ones I have seen include the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, The Burj in Dubai, The Colosseum, Eiffel Tower, St Marks and the Vatican outside Rome, Empire State Building & Chrylser Building in  NYC, I did also see the Twin Towers and have been there since losing them too, a very surreal experience.  You cannot avoid St Marks in Venice but I did also walk for hours, crossed the many bridges and did the Gondola ride and was impressed by it all.

Victoria Falls was an amazing experience to see the scale of the Falls but equally seeing the White Rhinos was more moving for me.  Unfortunately, I think someone turned the tap off so I did not get the full experience!

So, who decides it is a landmark?, the majority I am sure are through local knowledge and from giving/looking for directions to somewhere else but these buildings do warrant a view of their own as you pass by. If you h ave any gems for me, let me know, I am heading to Rhodes for Easter, anything I should look out for?

I still have a huge list of the landmarks I want to see, Angkor Watt, Machu Picchu, the Great Wall, Mount Fuji, a very long list but I will remember, wherever I go, to notice the small things too.
