To cruise or not to cruise from Southampton. That is the question!

I am very lucky to live only 20 minutes from Southampton.  It really is a thriving port with many cruise lines using it as a start point for some wonderful itineraries.  My own personal experience was travelling with Royal Caribbean on the Voyager of the Seas.  We just hopped on a mini-bus from our house to the cruise terminal, checked in and then we were on holiday!  No worry about baggage allowances, flights, airport parking, transfers and battling my own personal fear of flying!  We traveled for 11 nights and saw some wonderful European ports in Spain, Portugal, Italy and France.

There are so many options that cruising from Southampton can offer.  Mini-cruises are a popular choice for those of you who haven’t cruised or just want a good value break and to take in the sights in some more local destinations such as Bruges and Amsterdam.  Slightly longer cruises can take you further afield to experience the beauty of Northern Europe or allow you to head towards the Mediterranean to take in some iconic cities such as Barcelona (my personal favourite) and Rome.  There are many grand crossings across the Atlantic to North America and The Caribbean and if you wish venture even further then a world cruise can start from your home port and be the beginning of a grand adventure.  The options seem endless.

So why wouldn’t you cruise from Southampton?  Lots of my customers have stated that they want to start their cruise in the sunshine.  Looking out of my window at this grey, rainy, very British day I can see that as a good reason.   If you fly to the destination a lot of the time the cruises can offer a more port rich itinerary meaning that you can explore all the places you want to and have less days at sea.  Also if you need to cruise for a shorter duration then flying to your ship gives you so many more options.
