What price luxury?

I read a recent article on what makes a 5 star hotel. We all have different opinions on what we perceive a luxury hotel is, but what about when you cruise? What is the selling point for you if you do pay for luxury? What does luxury mean to you? Is this a smaller ship with a high crew to passenger ratio? Is it the suites on board or the food? The facilities? The furnishings? Lets not also forget what some people think is luxury may not be your own personal choice.

There are many cruise lines out there but who in my humble opinion gives you that extra touch, that I call luxury?  The first thing I would mention is the cost. On paper it will look a lot more then you would normally pay but when you consider everything that is included you can perhaps see why you are paying so much.  Do some calculations, think about extras you have to pay for such as drinks, speciality restaurants, excursions etc, you might be shocked at what your paying for on a cruise line “not” perceived as a luxury one!

So, here are some thoughts to ponder on if you are considering moving up to luxury cruising.

Most of the luxury cruise lines have staterooms/suites which all have a balcony, they tend to be more spacious and have high end toiletries. Flat screen TV’s, en suite wi-fi and Ipod docking stations are also very common.

Luxury cruise lines do take pride in their crew. How do they always know and remember your name!

You are not required to tip on luxury lines, as gratuities are built into the fare.

On most of the luxury lines there is no charge for alcoholic drinks, at the bars, restaurants, lounges, even in your suite! The mini bars are also well stocked.

If fine dining is your thing then the luxury cruise lines excel. Many notable celebrity chefs such as Nobu Matsuhisa have teamed up with them to give our dining experience a real wow factor!

Most of the luxury cruise liners have smaller ships, therefore getting to places the “big boys” cant access. You may also have a overnight stay in a port giving you more time in that destination.

Great and different excursions are offered and don’t forget Regent offer many excursions as part of their package.

Lastly, you actually get to know people!  Smaller ships mean it is much easier to meet people more then once.

Of course, this may not be up your street, or you simply find you cant afford it.  I would always say book the best cruise you can afford, perhaps that means you will be on the deck of a luxury cruise on your next holiday!
