A Blast from the Past !!!

Many of my customers will know that I have been off for the last week. Unfortunately we lost my Mother in Law. Very sad for my husband and I, Thank you to all my customers for baring with me over this awful time. and my colleagues for their support.  I am glad to be back at work doing what I do best.

Whilst going through her things My husband came across some Top Trump cards from way back. I don’t know if you will all remember them but they were all the rage back in the 70,s. The aim of the game was to top trump your opponent , then steal their card.

I was shocked to find these were of ships. Must have been fate for us to be together and  I wanted to share a few with you.

qe2

It was lovely to see that the top trump was the Queen Elizabeth 2. A Beautiful old ship. QE2 made her maiden voyage in 1969 (the year I was Born) and was one of the last great Transatlantic liners. At 70,327 tons and 963 feet long with a top speed of 32.5 knots she is also one of the fastest and grandest passenger vessels ever built. QE2 is arguably the most famous liner in the world. The Queen Elizabeth 2’s maiden voyage, from Southampton to New York City, commenced on May 2, 1969, taking 4 days, 16 hours and 35 minutes. However, Prince Charles was the first “civilian” passenger to board the ship, on her voyage from the shipyard in Clydebank to dry-dock in Greenock. The QE2 became Cunard Line’s longest-serving Liner and cruise ship. QE2 is now docked permanently in Dubai. Have you ever been on her? Please tell me all about it.

2nd one I liked : Europa from West Germany: Her maiden voyage took her on a transatlantic crossing in 1966, She was later sold to Costa cruises in 1981, however her sailing with Costa was short lived as she crashed into the breakwater in Cadiz harbour in 1984.

Very distinctive with the Yellow funnels.

3rd one with a lot of history:

Cunard Adventurer from Great Britain: Started out in 1971 her maiden voyage was to cross from Southampton to San Juan, where she began her fly cruise life for the British offering tours of the Caribbean, Panama Canal and South America. She did a steady 22 Knots without any shudders. She was sold to what became NCL and renamed Sunward II in 1977. She was then sold on to be renamed as Triton 1991 and then with the collapse of the company ROCL, Louis Hellenic Cruises obtained the beautiful MV Triton at auction late in 2004 and she was renamed Coral.

She was given a comprehensive refit, refreshing her public venues and accommodations and making a number of changes suitable to the Louis Cruises requirements. She was completed in time for the 2005 cruise season. The MV Coral, ex Triton, Sunward II, Cunard Adventurer departed Piraeus named Cora and she  arrived offshore at the Alang breakers yards on January 21, 2014. Thus, this is the end of one of the most successful cruise ships having sailed successfully for 43 years, except for those six years whilst she was with Cunard, all because she was the wrong ship for them, but perfect for other companies!

A little bit of history on the 3 ships I chose from the pack.

Have you been on any of these ships , I would love to hear your stories from days gone by, Maybe on one of these  wonderful ocean liners or any others.
