So yesterday, Royal Caribbean broke the news that the Independence of the Seas will no longer be spending the 2020 summer season sailing out of Southampton, she will instead be based in Fort Lauderdale sailing round the Caribbean. A move Royal Caribbean stated was due to the phenomenal demand in North America, especially for itineraries to Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas, Royal Caribbean’s newly redeveloped Private Island costing almost £150 million pounds.
This news appeared to be greeted as a slap in the face to the many UK customers who year after year have remained loyal to the company, sailing on what was one of the UK’s most popular ships, judging by comments seen on various sites and social media.
So what do customers who booked on the Independence of the Seas get in return for their now cancelled holidays? Well any monies paid will be refunded and a 25% Cruise credit based on the value of the cruise they had booked, excluding and port taxes and charges. The majority of customers say this compensation is inadequate, especially seeing as the Anthem of the Seas, which is now the only other Royal Caribbean ship based out of Southampton, is over 25% more in cost based on similar itineraries that the Independence was due to sail.
