Mykonos, a gem in the Aegean.

On our recent cruise on the Thomson Spirit, we visited the stunningly picturesque Mykonos Town.

Standing on the western coast of the Greek island of Mykonos, part of the Cyclades, and measuring 85km2, the island is nicknamed “The Island of the Winds”. This was very true during our brief stay!

We wandered around, passing many quaint little shops, selling some beautiful items. There were designer names such as Louis Vuitton, next to shops offering fabulous ceramic items, next to shops stocking the more traditional tourist gifts. Definitely something for everyone. As it was only April, the shop keepers were all desperate for your money, but one thing was for sure, this is not the cheapest Greek island.

Standing guard over “Little Venice” are the instantly recognizable Windmills. These date back as far as the 16th century, and provide an ideal location to view a romantic sunset!

This is one of the most cosmopolitan, and through the height of summer, one of the most crowded towns in the Aegean, but if you have never been there, then take it from me, it`s certainly somewhere that should be on your list.

One final thing, look out for the islands mascot, Petros the Pelican. The original Petros was rescued by local fisherman in the 1950s, and was very popular with both locals and tourists until his death in the `80s. There are now 3 Petros, and can often be found in the heart of the town, so keep your eyes peeled.
