Emergency at sea.

This must be one of the scariest things to happen while on a cruise ship………a passenger falls over the side.

Can you imagine this happening to you? Well it did to Kareen Kennedy while she was sailing on the NCL ship Norwegian Epic near the Bahamas. She was eating dinner at 9 p.m. in the fifth-deck Taste main dining room, when the announcement “Code Oscar portside.” came over the intercom.

She then returned to her balcony just in time to see 2 rescue boats descend from the ship. They then patrolled the waves, using searchlights to try to find the unfortunate lady. A little while later, to the relief of the guests and crew,  the captain announced that the passenger had been rescued.

After being plucked out of the water, this lucky passenger was checked over on the ship before being transferred to hospital upon arrival Port Canaveral the next day.

The whole incident, which only delayed the ship by an hour, shows how important the highly trained staff on the ship are. Their prompt actions surely averted a disaster, and the woman should be eternally grateful to them.

This accident just proves how important your muster drill is when you embark on your next cruise. You may have done it several times before but practice makes perfect. All ships are different so it pays to know where everything is just in case it happens to you.

This is why it is vitally important that all guests obey the safety notices around the ship, they are not there to spoil your fun, but to possibly save your life.

It is not big or clever to climb on the side of the ship, and all parents need to make sure that their children are being supervised and know what not to do while at sea.

I have had many enjoyable cruises and have never felt in any danger, but it does make me appreciate the tireless work of the crew even more.
