‘MEDICANE ZORBA’ BATTERS GREEK ISLANDS!

I know what you’re thinking, ‘What the hell is a Medicane?’ and ‘Who the hell is Zorba?’

These were the words my family came back talking about following their recent Greek Islands cruise aboard P&O Ventura.

Medicane: A Hurricane, formed in the Mediterranean. Genius really.

Zorba: Refers to Zorba The Greek, a book published about a million moons ago that I haven’t read.

This is what the crew and passengers were referring to when a freakishly large weather system hit Greece and it’s islands last week. A weather system so severe, that the ship had to cancel it’s stops and sail to less dangerous destinations. Not at all what you expect in September in that part of the world.

For the passengers, a few upset stomachs as the seas churned the ship up and down in the high winds, luckily cruise guests were not seriously injured from what I understand, although please feel free to correct me with updated info, it’s still very recent. But for the Greeks, cities, towns and villages have taken a beating, leaving at least three people missing.

Cyclones and 55 mph winds have made this one of the worst storms ever to hit the islands in recent times, and no doubts will have caused an unfathomable amount of damage, all of which will in turn cost the country a small fortune to repair.

This on the back of horrific typhoons close to Japan, causing tremendous damage and loss, it’s fair to say the weather has caused chaos in various parts of the world in recent weeks.

All this on the back of one of the finest British summertime’s I can remember. Well we all know now that when we have nice weather, it’s shocking everywhere else!

Just a few weeks ago on my own holiday in Olbia, Sardinia, we were hit by a rain storm like I had never seen before in the Med. Lightening striking the airport, and flooded roads making drivers pull over in fear! I had never seen anything like it.

But what is causing all this freak weather?

Majority will of course point at climate change, ice caps melting, the planet heating up, and who can blame them! Anyone who needs proof global warming is going to be a huge problem in the future is surely witnessing it right?

Me, I think it’s aliens……..

Okay that’s unlikely.

Could it just be that the planet sees us heading for political and economic crisis, and it’s mother natures way of trying to bring us together? Nothing like a natural disaster to get the global community pulling in the same direction!

Either way, it’s not put folks off cruising. We are still booking in our droves in the UK, and more in other countries. It seems not even the threat of cyclones and typhoons will stop us having our cruises, and to that I am eternally thankful, since I’d be out of a job if this wasn’t the case!

In fairness, the cruise lines are giving us some mega offers at the moment. I mean, I can be as tight fisted as they come, and even I am tempted by P&O’s 2020 intro prices on Iona, their new flagship.
