Don’t moose out on an Alaska Cruise!

Did you know that Alaska is the largest but most sparsely populated U.S. state?

Known for its open spaces, glaciers, mountains & forests along with its abundant wildlife and numerous quaint small towns. Alaska is also home to the U.S.’s highest peak – Mount McKinley in the impressive Denali National Park. The best way to see the beauty of Alaska is via a cruise ship; Alaska cruises rank on most peoples cruise bucket list (including myself!).

The Alaska cruise season is from May to September with most Alaska cruises starting in Seattle or Vancouver although there are occasionally departures from other cities such as San Francisco or Los Angeles. The top cruise lines for Alaska cruises are Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruises & Norwegian Cruise Line. I always recommend opting for a balcony cabin so you can fully appreciate the passing scenery, true it will be more expensive but this really is a once in a lifetime experience.

Don’t forget to bring a good camera, warm clothing and a pair of binoculars. The cruise lines offer some fantastic optional excursions including whale watching in select ports!

Let’s take a look at some of the destinations you can expect to visit on an Alaska cruise.

Glacier Bay

Many cruisers consider Glacier Bay to be the highlight of any Alaska cruise itinerary, located in the Inside Passage the bay is flanked by high peaks and the huge Grand Pacific Glacier. Keep an eye out for humpback whales!

Juneau

The capital city of Alaska, Juneau can only be reached by plane or ship/ferry.  Juneau is home to the stunning Mendenhall Glacier which is over 13 miles long!

Perhaps travel on the Mount Roberts Tramway which whisks visitors up nearly 2,000 feet from Juneau’s waterfront in just six minutes – providing a panoramic view and access to numerous hiking trails.

Skagway

Most people have never heard of the charming small Gold Rush town of Skagway until they visit the port on their Alaska cruise. A tiny town with a population of less than 400 people, in the Summer the populations swells with tourists

The town has a colourful history, its most famous resident was Soapy Smith, a villain of the Gold Rush days! The town is also home to The Golden North Hotel which is the oldest hotel in Alaska and is said to be haunted!

The discovery of gold in the Yukon in 1896 set off the Klondike Gold Rush, which saw roughly 100,000 prospectors flood into Alaska, all with the hope of striking it rich. Much of this traffic flowed through Skagway, which offered both a deepwater port and the most direct overland route to the gold fields.

Ketchikan

The charming Alaskan city of Ketchikan faces the Inside Passage, a popular cruise route along the state’s southeastern coast. Ketchikan is renowned for its many Native America totem poles on display throughout the city. Nearby is the beautiful Misty Fiords National Monument with its snowcapped mountains, waterfalls & salmon streams. It is also home to a wide variety of rich wildlife including black bears, wolves & bald eagles!
