MSC Cruise Ship Crashes into Venice Port

So you may have seen the horrific news on Sunday that the MSC Opera crashed into port hitting another river cruise ship causing devastating issues to both ships. The video went viral Sunday lunchtime and can be viewed from my work Facebook account on the following link.

As you can imagine, this was an absolutely devastating situation to have been in especially if you were port side and saw this ship heading towards you at such speed. You can see that some passengers fell into the water trying to disembark the river ship quickly with no success. There were 5 minor casualties in total.

It would appear that one of the tug boards helping to navigate the ship into port had the connecting rope snap, leaving only 1 tug boat to assist. At this point, the ship’s engines were not in use and due to the high winds and current, the ship fleed directly to the cruise port of Venice hitting into a much smaller river cruise ship. From the video, you can see passengers start to flee from the river ship making it to port.

Some customers are put off by this but as I have said, this could have been a car accident or something similar that may not necessarily put you off. I think because it is such a large vessel and because of the size of it, it would appear to put the winds up some people. I must admit, I found this terrifying to watch as if I was a passenger seeing a big ship like that coming at that speed to me in port, I would definitely be scared.

However, life goes on and as we recently saw the Viking cruise ship have an engine failure causing chaos at sea, we saw that the cruise line and ground patrol staff look after everyone and made sure everyone was taken to safety and checked out for any injuries. We see horrible things happen from time to time but it’s how the cruise line deals with it that restores my faith in the way customers are looked after. Well done MSC cruise lines for your prompt and professional help with assisting all of these passengers.
