Sri Lanka

Our brand new Bucket List takes in one of my favourite holidays.  Chris & I went to Sri Lanka a few years back before Charlie came along and I can honestly say it was one of the best holidays we have been on.
We had a land based holiday and stayed in the small resort of Waikkal. The hotel had a fabulous location right on the beach. We would spend our evenings watching the locals play cricket whilst the sun set on the beach. We took a trip into the local town and it was great to wander around the local market trying all the weird & wonderful fruits and vegetables on offer.
We also took a tour around Sri Lanka as there is so much to see and do outside of the main resorts. First stop was Colombo the capital city. This is where you see the true hustle and bustle of this island we had a night here before moving onto Sigiriya. This is a Unesco world heritage site also known as the fortress in the sky. The rock itself includes remnants of a ruined palace surrounded by gardens, ponds and canals. The rock is also known as Lion Rock due to the huge lion claws at the entrance. The walk to the top is a challenge but you can take your time and go at your own pace. The views from the top are amazing and you will feel such a sense of achievement once you reach the top. Heading back down is easier!
We then headed to a place called Dambulla. We were in for a real treat as there was a one day cricket test happening. My husband an avid fan of any sport decided it was a must. When we travel we really like to mix with the locals and get a feel for the place and as you can see from the pictures the locals made us feel more than welcome.
After the cricket we headed off to Kandy for the night where we visited the Temple of the Sacred tooth
Our final day of this whirlwind tour took us to see the local tea plantation. This was a real eye opener for me! They tell you whats really in the tea bag! We were also told to try the tea with no milk or sugar. I went to Sri Lanka taking milk & 2 sugars and I came home drinking my tea black with no sugar and have never looked back.
The scenery throughout the area is breathtaking.
Finally a visit to Sri Lanka isnt complete without seeing some local animals! We visited the Pinawella elephant orphanage. Our Bucket List takes you to the Minneriya National wildlife park where you will take a jeep around the park. You will have the opportunity to spot buffaloes, wild boar, sloth bears and elephants.
We even spotted these monkeys along the side of the road and offered them my breakfast!
