Manatees & Florida wildlife

Having spent many holidays in Florida we have seen lots of wildlife on our travels including Pelicans fishing off the coast, Alligators having a leisurely stroll at the Kennedy Space center but the best thing we have seen are the Manatees up in Crystal River.

Manatees are also known as Sea Cows. They migrate to Crystal river when the temperature drops in the Gulf of Mexico. In Crystal River there are around 40 resident manatees but this number increases to around 400 between November – April.

Back in 1966 they were put on the endangered species list. Since then they have been under close watch to ensure their survival. Thanks to the many national parks and rehabilitation areas there has been a significant increase in numbers.

If you are visiting Orlando you really should get out of the parks for the day and head to the Gulf Coast. We offer an amazing experience snorkeling with these mammals. You can also try paddle boarding or kayaking if thats more suitable for you. You will also take an airboat ride along the Homosassa River visiting the marine park. The park is a rehabilitation center for injured and orphaned manatees and once they are treated they are placed back in their natural habitat.

Keep an eye out for our new cruise offers that combine a visit to see these mystical mammals.
