Happy ending following man overboard

Well, it doesn’t normally have a happy ending but it seems you can survive going overboard after all!

At the weekend The Carnival Glory rescued a crew member who had gone overboard from another cruise ship in the Caribbean near Cuba.

Usually, when something like this happens it doesn’t end up well, but for a change, there was a miraculous rescue from the Carnival cruise ship.

It was a 33-year-old Filipino crew member who went overboard from the Norwegian Getaway cruise ship. The incident happened around 28 miles northwest of Pinar del Rio, Cuba. The ship was on her way from her last port of call in Cozumel towards Miami, Florida, scheduled to arrive back on the 1st July.

The following was a tweet from US Coast Guards.

A positive outcome was not expected as it is generally the case with a cruise ship overboard. The US Coast Guard was notified shortly after 3 pm on Saturday and a sentry plane was launched to begin the search. Soon after more Coast Guard assets joined the search covering a vast area.

After the search had been ongoing for nearly 24 hours it was actually a hotel steward onboard Carnival Glory who spotted the crew member in the water around 21 miles north of Cuba. Immediately the Officers on the Bridge were alerted who launched a lifeboat to pick up the man. Carnival Glory was just beginning a 7-night western Caribbean cruise the same as the Norwegian Getaway was returning from.

In a statement from the Coast Guard the, as yet, unnamed man is said to be in a stable condition. The findings of an investigation into how this happened are anticipated.
