The Return Of A Legend

"At Sea - October 12, 2005: A life belt from the deck of the Queen Elizebeth 2 ocean liner operated by Cunard. The QE2 was retired and no longer serves as a cruise ship."

Cunard`s Queen Elizabeth I, or QE2 as she became affectionately know, is still the most famous ocean liner in the world even know that she has retired and become a floating hotel in Dubai.

I sailed on her twice and she was a lovely ship – a “proper” ship as someone said to me yesterday. She was launched by the Queen in September 1967 and carried more than 2.5 million passengers during her 40 years of service with Cunard.   She sailed over 5.5 million miles and still remains the longest serving ocean liner in history. Her final voyage was on 11th November 2018 when she sailed away from Southampton to Dubai waived away by thousands of her loyal fans.

She was very different to a  modern day liner. Her outside cabins had proper portholes , her balconies had lifeboats on front of  the wndows and all of the cabins and suites were different shapes and sizes, not like today’s pre-packaged monster ships. Now she has a new life in the surreal destination of Dubai. Docked permanently at Dubai’s Mina Rashid Marina she is a 13 storey hotel with restaurants, bars , a swimming pool and other features. She is due to open for business in October this year.

So now a chance to visit the legendary ship again. We have something which will be on many peoples Bucket List, a voyage on Queen Mary II combined with a stay on Queen Elizabeth II. Travel out to Dubai for a 3 night stay on board QE2 then sail back to Southampton on Queen Mary travelling up through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean before arriving in Southampton
