Douro Delights

View of the Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square) by night, Lisbon, Portugal. The square is situated near the Tagus River and commonly known as Terreiro do Paço (Palace Square). It is dominated by the statue of King José I on the front and the triumphal Rua Augusta Arch on the back. The tophill castle of Lisbon can also be seen on the background.

I lover river cruising. It is one of the fastest growing types of cruise holiday in the travel industry today, and I can fully understand why. The river cruises boats sail gracefully along the river, mooring each night in the centre of some of the world’s most lovely cities. This is a very leisurely holiday.

A river that I would love to do is Portugal`s river of Gold – the Douro, usually sailing from and to Porto with the chance to take in Lisbon as well on a 10 day trip. Viking have a really nice cruise that starts with a two night stay in Lisbon and includes a tour of this lovely city.

Starting the second day with a tour of Lisbon.  beginning  at Belém with a tour of Jerónimos Monastery, one of the most prominent examples of Portuguese late Gothic Manueline style of architecture. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Tower of Belém that you will also explore. Followed by  a walking tour through the narrow streets of the Alfama District, where you will learn about Lisbon’s long, multicultural history.

Next day it is on to Porto, best known of course for its wine, where you will embark the Viking river cruise vessel.

Next stop is Regua a peaceful town overlooking the Douro, followed by The last Portuguese village along the Douro, Barca D`Alva less than 2km from the Spanish border. Surrounded by mountains, and on a gentle bend in the River Douro. Salamanca is actually in spain and a full day tour by coach from the boat is included before the ship sails on to Pinhao before heading back to Porto to end the cruise.

Of course with Viking the excursions are included, as are all meals with drinks at lunch and dinner. Flights and transfers are included too, along with the services of a Tour Manager. Gratuities are also included for 2020 if you book early, and, believe me you need to be booking now to get on this lovely tour.
