How to choose your Cabin…

You have chosen your cruise, found the perfect itinerary and ship. What next? You select your cabin. Choosing a cabin can sometimes make or break your cruise. So, some consideration is required to find the right cabin for you.

Firstly, what type of cabin? Inside, Outside, Balcony or suite? Then we have Promenade view, virtual balcony,  sheltered balcony, obstructed view the list goes on.

Generally, Inside will be the most cost-effective, so if you are on a budget this is a great option. If you are worried you might be claustrophobic then is it worth paying more to get an Oceanview. That way you have some natural daylight and be able to see what the weather is doing. Tip* If you book an inside cabin – turn the TV on and find the channel for the bridge, that way you can pretend its a window 🙂

If you can I would always try and get a balcony cabin for me, there is nothing better than waking up in the morning with your nice white fluffy dressing gown stepping out onto your personal balcony. Having room service breakfast to your cabin, whilst sailing into a stunning destination like Venice.

Also, great for sipping a G&T whilst your partner gets ready for the evening ahead. Again it does depend on the itinerary if I was on a transatlantic, would I even use my balcony? Probably not so an oceanview or an inside would be a better option. The money you save, would get you a nice handbag in New York!!

However, if the cost of the balcony works out the same as another holiday I would happily go for a lesser grade.

So you have your cabin type selected, what about the position of the cabin? High or Low – Mid, Aft or Forward? Are you worried about possible seasickness?

Are you worried about the motion? If so I would personally advise a midship cabin but on a lower deck.  The middle of the ship is the steadiest. A lot of people pay more to be high up on the decks. I would personally choose lower down. The higher you are the more you will feel the Roll of the ship.

Generally speaking, people tend to prefer Mid ship and a high deck.  Usually, the lower decks are the least popular. I mean we’ve all seen Titanic so I get it! However, on my recent cruise when we had a bad crossing. I was so glad to be on a lower deck and mid ship. The difference felt when we moved to a higher deck that wasn’t Midship. What a massive difference. A customer of mine once asked the captain, if you were a paying customer what position would you choose. His reply ‘ A cabin as low down as possible, mid to aft position. If it’s good enough for the cabin its good enough for me!

Next, do I want to be Port Side (left) or Starboard (right) This one is a tricky one because it does depend on the destination, and which way its sailing. Sailing to Alaska? You will be traveling along the west coast of North America either north or southbound. If you’re on a northbound trip and you want to get a good view of the coastlines, you’ll want to be on the starboard.

And finally, what if you have seen the bargain of the century and its what they call a Gty – guaranteed, saver, voyager fare? This basically means – You will know the type of cabin, ie guaranteed Oceanview cabin but the cruise line will assign the cabin number to you. They will usually assign the cabin when you get your tickets a few weeks before you sail. If the lower grades are sold out it can sometimes be a good way to get a free upgrade (this is down to the cruise line) These offers are often a lot cheaper than selecting your cabin so certainly worth thinking about if you know you have your sea legs and really don’t mind where you are on the ship.

I  hope this has helped, and as always if you are looking to book a cruise. Contact me and I will help you find the perfect cruise and the perfect cabin for you 🙂

Keep Cruising,

Love, Bonnie x
