Fight you for that burger….

Food is a great reason to cruise. But have you ever been in a queue at the buffet or special BBQ or pub lunch and the person in front takes the last portion of the food that you had your eye on.

What do you do next?

Ask them to give it up?

Say you had your eye on that?

Or offer to fight them for it?

Now you may be reading this thinking where is Adrian going with this? When I used to queue up for food in a uniform we always gave way to the customers. They always got priority and I kept quiet if they helped themselves to the last burger, from right under my nose.

The dining area on a cruise ship can be hostile. If this situation arises and a cruiser decides that the last burger is theirs. Arguments start, some of these arguments turn to angry shouting, pushing and shoving which can sometimes turn into full on fights. There will be other burgers coming shortly. The chefs keep cooking until everyone is full to the brim, but fights over food are quite common on cruises. If you are new to cruising, food is never in short supply so don’t worry!

Next time you are on a ship on a sea day and there is a BBQ on the open deck have a quick look around and see if you can spot the security officers. They will be there! Firstly, to calm any situations that arise or if a fight breaks out they can remove the trouble makers.

Where do they put trouble makers? On a lot of cruise ships there is a small holding area, brig, ship jail. Just a small room where trouble makers can cool off until the ship reaches land so they can be escorted off to be handed to the police. I worked closely with security mostly at the gangway and they can be firm but fair with the cruisers. But when a fight breaks out they are quick and before you know it the situation is over.

If you have ever experienced a fight on a ship? Been put in the brig? Or were you a security officer on a ship with a story to tell? Tell us your story…
