Expedition Cruises! What are they?

The Antarctic, Galápagos Islands, Arctic Circle, they are all places where cruise lines are venturing in order to enhance your experience.

There is a growing demand for adventure and expedition based cruises, whether it be to experience incredible scenery or amazing wildlife they totally immerse you in the environment with exciting excursions and cultural experiences.

Follow in the footsteps of the great explorers, Cook, Columbus, Amundsen, to name but a few.

As I said the main areas are the Antarctic, the Arctic Circle and the Galápagos Islands but there are other destinations and they are growing all the time.

Expedition ships are not the huge floating hotels that you associate with cruising, they are much smaller ships, which is not to say that some are not luxurious, as some are, however, some are shall we say practical rather than luxurious.  They must be smaller to get to the places they visit safely and with as little impact on the environment as possible. They also carry Zodiacs, Kayaks and would you believe on some a Helicopter, to get you up close and personal to the unique features or wildlife on your trip.

Their small but attentive crew are there to give you insights along the way, enhancing your experience further. In addition, Expedition cruises have experts from all fields to assist you to understand what you are witnessing. Biologists, geologists, naturalists and photographers are on hand to make the most of these very privileged, personal encounters with the people and places you visit. To help you understand the traditions and cultures and the behaviours of the wildlife so that you have a truly unforgettable experience.

Celebrity Flora will offer an opportunity to sleep under the stars on a private deck in the Galapagos, with an expert on hand to explain the constellations.

Watch Dolphins and Whales in their natural habitat, see the amazing Aurora Borealis, visit volcanic plateaus, experience stunning Waterfalls and Geysers, or enter the realm of the Polar Bear.

See breath-taking scenery, Lush tropical forests, frosty wilderness, towering icebergs and marvel at the rare and often sadly endangered species you will encounter along the way.

Are they cheap? No obviously not. Are they for everyone? Again, obviously not. If you want to don your black tie and go out to dinner, then see a west end show and party to the wee hours then this is definitely not for you.

If you want a once in a lifetime experience, to see and do things that others may only dream about. If you want to make lifelong friends with similar interests and have intelligent, scintillating conversation over a good meal and few drinks, with opportunities to try local delicacies, then you may just have found the experience for you.

These cruises are limited and book up well in advance so if you are considering one then don’t leave it until the last minute.
