My USA Trip – Part 1 – Chuckanaut Drive And Oysters

I am back from my amazing trip to Washington State and Las Vegas – and what a week it was! We stayed in amazing hotels, ate in superb restaurants and were generally treated like royalty from start to finish.

At 6.30am at Heathrow I met the other 11 travellers that I would be spending the next week with. We were whisked off to the Clubhouse, which is the Virgin Atlantic upper class lounge. This was a large lounge with a great a la carte food menu and an extensive drinks menu. The signature cocktail is called the Virgin Red which everyone had (It’s always 5pm somewhere).

The direct 9 and a half hour flight to Seattle was on a Dreamliner and I was lucky enough to be allocated an extra leg room seat. The food, service & entertainment on board was excellent. There was a massive choice of new release films and TV programmes to choose from. We landed in Seattle and cleared immigration which was very busy and took around an hour to get through.

The local time was 11am but our body clocks were on UK time &  were telling us it was 8 hours later. We were picked up and whisked off to our first stop which was the Oyster Bar which is on on Chuckanaut Drive. This road is an extremely scenic waterfront 20 mile drive next to the beautiful Puget Sound. The restaurant was born in the 1920’s  from an oyster farm that needed an outlet to sell it’s wares. It has developed over the years from a roadside shack to a fine dining restaurant.

It took us about an hour and a half to drive there so we were ready for our lunch/dinner. I personally love oysters, but most on the trip hadn’t tried them before and there were some unusual reactions from those that gave them a go.

Although we were there on a cloudy day the scenery was still beautiful and would be even better in the sunshine. This area is actually closer to Vancouver than Seattle and is only 22 miles from the Canadian border.

The food was great and we were warmly welcomed by the owners & staff which was a theme that would continue throughout the trip.

Next time I will introduce you to Bellingham & tell you how to make the most of a pre-cruise stay if you’re cruising from either Seattle or Vancouver.
