Domincan Republic

As you read this I will be sipping a cocktail at the bar no doubt! For our summer holiday this year we are heading back to Dominican Republic. Myself & Chris met out there when we were working for First Choice Holidays. I was working as a rep and Chris was a football coach 11 long years ago. Since then lots has happened including getting a dog, Ozzy our Shih Poo, buying our first house, getting married in St Lucia and having our little boy Charlie.

We are really looking forward to an excursion called Outback Safari. When we worked out in Dominican Republic it was our top selling trip. You get taken around in a huge truck. You are taken into the Dominican countryside to meet a local family and pass by local schools visiting the friendly Dominicans. We will also visit a chocolate plantation and local Rum Shack. We will also visit a fruit plantation to see local fruits growing. Finally the chance for some boogie boarding at the local Punta Cana beach.

We have also planned a visit to Saona Island. A tropical Island 12 miles from the mainland. Its a pretty big island at 15 miles long and 3.3 miles wide. It is part of a protected national park. There are only around 300 people living on the Island and there are no cars. You can imagine it really is a tropical Island.

The resort we are going to is called Punta Cana and is also known as La Costa Del Coco – The Coconut Coast! It has 32km stretch of beaches and clear waters. The weather is currently 29 Degrees but the humidity in July normally sits around 70%.

We are travelling during Hurricane season and its a risk to most Caribbean Islands along with Florida, Texas and the Carolina’s. Hurricane season officially starts 1st June and ends 30th November. Last year was very bad with several islands being affected. These islands mostly rely on tourism so I feel a duty to still visit them to help the local economy.

When we got married in St Lucia it was Hurricane season and yes we had a little rain but that was it. The rain would clear up as quickly as it started.

Would you be put off by travelling in Hurricane Season? We got a bargain for our holiday, the same price as 2 weeks in Spain. I know what I prefer!
