Arctic Explorer & Midnight Sun

Today I popped down to Leith, Edinburgh for a visit on board the MS Midnatsol (Midnight Sun) She has stopped by on her way back to Norway where she will spend her summer. There was a question asked today and I found it really quite interesting – Do you want to go to Norway to see the beautiful scenery or do you want to go on a fancy ship with casinos, climbing walls & 1000’s of passengers?!  This is a really valid question.

MS Midnatsol 1

Hurtigruten do not pretend to be something they are not. Someone compared them to a luxury ferry. Well the MS Midnatsol can hold 22 cars on the car deck! However the car deck turns into something completely different once she heads over to Antarctica. This is where they store the huge amount of expedition equipment on board. From Polar Circle boats built specifically for the extreme weather to the Kayaks stored to take you on a guided trip to spot all numbers of wildlife including penguins, birds, whales & sea lions.

MS Midnatsol 2

On board you have an expedition team with you. From May to September whilst she is in Norway you can expect lectures that are so informative about local cultures. Go out on Hikes, take a tour in a Kayak. They also have a science center on board where you can meet like minded passengers with similar interests. Find out about subjects such as biology, history and geology. The Expedition leaders are all picked for their expertise.

Hurtigruten have the brand new MS Roald Amunsdam coming into service in 2018. This ship will be noting like you have ever seen. This state of the art ship will feature brand new environmentally sustainable hybrid technology that will reduce fuel consumption by sailing with electrical propulsion. The ship will be silent and emission free. Holding around 500 passengers with a modern sleek design this really will be the ship of the future.

The MS Roald Amunsdam will be based out in Antarctica in the winter months offering a real Arctic experience. Cruise through Drake Passage, Chiliean Fjords and get up close and personal to the Polar Circle.
