Zero Waste Cruising

In July my good friends Kate & Pete are opening Taunton’s very first Zero Waste Shop. It’s very exciting and with the feedback already being received from the town, I’m sure Lesser Litter is going to be a great success.

With that in mind, It’s fantastic to see that more and more cruise lines are also changing their policy’s regarding single use plastic.

As of the 2nd July Hurtigruten will become the world’s first plastic free shipping company. All single use plastic straws, drink mixers, plastic glasses, coffee lids and plastic bags will be banned on all Hurtigruten ships.

Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam said “At Hurtigruten, we have focused on the problem with plastic pollution for years,”

“BUT IT’S TIME TO TAKE ACTION. BY GETTING RID OF SINGLE USE PLASTIC ON BOARD ALL SHIPS ALREADY BY THIS SUMMER, WE WILL HOPEFULLY GET OTHERS TO FOLLOW. IT IS POSSIBLE TO ACT NOW, AND THE OCEANS DOES NOT DESERVE MORE HESITATION.”

Fred Olsen have also implemented new policies across their fleet.

They are removing single use coffee cups from Bookmark Cafe’s, replacing condiment tubs and swapping plastic laundry bags for linen ones.  They also plan to reduce the use of cling film by 32%

For the sake of our oceans, let’s hope more cruise line follow suit and plastic free cruising becomes the norm.
