As the news of the demise of Thomas Cook sank in it got me thinking about how different the high street looks today.
It seems more and more businesses are really struggling to maintain their place. This often leads to us trying to second guess who will fall victim next and who will move with the times to try to stay profitable.
Looking back just a few years big players who have lost the battle include Woolworths, Habitat, BHS, HMV, Comet, Toys R Us the list goes on. There are some who are clinging on such as Debenhams but realistically is the writing already on the wall not to mention one of our favorite Pizza Places Pizza Express.
M&S has also seen its own struggles as it fell out of the FTSE 100 back in early September. It was interesting to watch the TV program M&S – Past its Sell-By Date. For me having grown up being dragged around the clothing department the one thing that resonated most was when Jeff Banks said he could imagine in years to come people saying ‘M&S used to sell clothes’. This really demonstrates how a retailer has had to adapt to the changing markets to survive.
So, whilst we ask ‘could Thomas Cook has done anything differently’ we really have to, unfortunately, move on as the High Street already has – empty units now on the market.
Thankfully all holidaymakers should now be repatriated but our biggest thoughts should be with those whose livelihoods are no more. Having been in their position a number of years ago when made redundant by Thomas Cook they have my empathy. This also emphasise the importance of making sure you are booked and Protected by ABTA and ATOL to ensure when things do go wrong you are taken good care off.
