The Excursion Minefield

Excursions can be an essential part of any holiday, and a cruise is no exception. The itinerary, of course, has alot to do with it as some destinations will not necessarily need excursions to get the best out of your holiday. Caribbean Islands, where you may want to just go to a beach, are a good example of an organised trip not being too important. Palma, Majorca, also springs to mind as it is such a nice walk along the promenade into the city itself where you can wander around for hours on end. If you want to go a bit further afield, maybe the little train up to Soller the booking  an excursion will have its benefits.

So you`ve booked your cruise and now start to plan days out. I went to Norway last year on Celebrity Silhouette and it was a lovely cruise and beautiful destination where some trips are a must, and need to be prebooked as soon as possible. The perfect example is the Flam Railway. I had been told many times that if I did not prebook the train the we would never get on! How right was that little tip. So many disappointed people queueing at the on board sales desk, some of them getting very angry when they discovered the train was full.

Alaska was a very similar experience where the cruise ships have exclusive rights to some of the most popular days out, anything to do with animals is a good guide. I couldn`t get to see a husky puppy for love nor money!

Sometimes its not just availability that is the issue, quite often doing a tour with a guide can make such diference to the place you are visiting. I have wandered around Pompeii with a quide book and come out none the wiser than when I arrived. Went with a guide and it was a completely different experience. Same can be said for the Pyramids of Giza and I guess Russia is another place where you would be better on a tour.

Lots to choose from so give me a call if you need some help.
