Destination Palma

The last time I went to Majorca for a holiday was years ago, that is until I sailed there on Azamara Quest in May last year. Sailing in to the port on a glorious, sunny day made me realise what a lovely destination this Spanish island is, and what a great place as a cruise port of call.

The port is at the far end of a long promenade that leads into Palma city itself. It is a fair walk but lovely in the sunshine as you pass the marina with all its luxury yachts, before reaching the town. One of the first things you see is  the Santa Maria cathedral, a Gothic landmark from the 13th century, which overlooks the Bay of Palma.

Palma may be the capital of Majorca but it is also a resort in it`s own right. The closest beach to Palma is at Ca’n Pere Antoni. This small  golden sand beach starts just beyond the cathedral. The a public beach is at Portixol –  only a short distance away  and is set away from the main road.

However most people travelling to Majorca who want a beach holiday will look to the resorts such as Cala Mesquida, Cala Millor, Santa Ponsa and Cala D`Or and  head to Palma for a city break. Loads to do in this elegant capital city with  tree lined avenues and excellent shops.

Palma is perfect for wandering between shops, bars, cafés and museums. Why not walk or maybe cycle along the promenade, taking  in the sea air and beautiful  Mediterranean views. It is also very easy to explore the island from Palma, whether by car or public transport. Take the little wooden train up to the mountain village of Soller and enjoy the spectacular scenery en route.

Palma really come alive at night with loads or really good bars & restaurants. A perfect destination whether on a cruise or city break, with a climate making it a year round destination.
