Destination Barcelona

Today I am in the lovely city of Barcelona. So what is there to do? I think I`ll take a look.

Top of the list has to be La Sagrada Família, the large unfinished Roman Catholic church designed by Gaudi. I have been there before and it is truly magnificent. Work on the church started in 1882 and it is still not finished. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Parc Guell – Unesco listed,  this is where architect Gaudí turned his hand to landscape gardening. I have been here before too , the mosaics are lovely – especially the lizards.

Of course Las Ramblas is a must too. Wouldn’t want to stay there as it is very noisy, but the tree – lined street is lovely to wander and stop for a coffee or lunch. It is very touristy but charming with its street performers in the shape of demons, gladiators, clowns, ballerinas, flamenco dancers to name but a few.

There are several museums too  including that of Pablo Picasso and the museum of Contemporary Art. Take a Big Bus tour around the city and hop on and off wherever you wish, might even go and see the famous football stadium – Camp Nou, or visit the beach.

Of course food is very important too and a good hotel ! My friends and I are staying at the Vincci Mae on the Avenida Diagonal and excellent are and very good for shopping. Inspired by American actress Mae West it is a boutique hotel with a rooftop pool, its is really nice.

Tonight  we are heading for a traditional Spanish Tapas Bar, El Xampanyet, recommended by a friend. Actually this is a champagne bar as Xampanyeria is considered to be Catalonia`s champagne, and the bar is  also recommended as the best in Barcelona. The traditional  tapas are  surprisingly delicious, we are told, and – importantly – keep you from keeling over after all the  lovely bubbles. Sounds like a good girly night out before our flight back home tomorrow.
