World Famous Athletes Ditch Olympic Village For Luxury Cruise Ships

We’ve all seen the headlines about the unfinished state of the Olympic Village in Rio. But did you realise that some athletes have now ditched the village to stay on a luxury cruise ship instead?

After reports of the exposed wiring, puddles in room and leaking sewage, things weren’t looking good for the brand new Olympic Village.

With the Australian’s team refusal to stay in the accommodation and many more countries deeming the accommodation completely unacceptable, the games organisers probably didn’t think things could get any worse.

However, some athletes have now gone so far as to check themselves onto a luxury cruise ship instead!

The American basketball team will not be heading to the village at all. Instead, they will be going to stay on the Silversea Silver Cloud.

AmyWe asked our specialist cruise consultant Amy what she thought about the surprising news! Amy told us: “I think it’s probably because unlike the majority of the athletes competing, the American basketball team are mostly millionaires! It’s alright for the lucky few!” You can learn more about Amy here!

It’s also been said that the team are taking the opportunity to stay on-board so they also have accommodation where they can see their families.

A spokesperson for the USA basketball team said: “We don’t stay in the village — we don’t feel it’s the best way to prepare. The players have a long season and they want to spend time with family.”

It’s also been announced that Norwegian Getaway is going to house the Olympic Committee!

Whilst the controversy over Russian athletes attending rumbles on, the housing issue, (for some at least), is solved.

What do you think of the news? Will you be tuning in to watch the Olympics? Do you think the athletes are over-reacting? Let us know in the comments below!
