Virgin Voyages has just announced its first ever cruise ship, due to arrive in 2020, will join the few vessels in the world as strictly adults-only.
President and CEO Tom McAlpin, alongside Richard Branson himself, revealed the news at the ship’s keel-laying ceremony in Italy’s Fincantieri shipyard, complete with a DJ, cocktails and an appearance by Boy George.
The keel-laying is the next major milestone for the 2,860-passenger, unnamed ship after the steel-cutting ceremony back in March this year.
Not only will the ship be exclusive to ages 18 and over, McAlpin confirmed that 86 percent of the cabins would have balconies and 93 percent would be ocean view.
The ship’s livery, which McAlpin said was inspired by the company’s airline Virgin America, will boast a “mermaid guide” icon designed by artist Toby Tinsley.
The color scheme will be primarily silver and grey with touches of red and it has been commented that the ship will boast a more intimate feel, inspired by super yachts.
McAlpin stressed the want to design something that was for “rejuvenation, reflection and transformation, without having to worry about the unpredictability of kids, whether they are your kids or someone else’s.”
“What we heard loud and clear was that people wanted to be able to set sail in an environment that felt more elevated.”
Further details are yet to be released on Virgin’s first cruise ship, but it is common knowledge that it will be equipped with technology designed to turn waste water into electricity, reducing the company’s carbon footprint.
It will be the first of three when it debuts in 2020, with the others expected to launch 2021 and 2022, and will sail Caribbean itineraries out of Miami.
