The Southampton Cruise Terminal Makeover Making Embarkation Significantly Smoother

The UK’s most popular cruise terminal is about to undergo a £12 million project of significant improvements.

Ocean Cruise Terminal at the Port of Southampton will be subject to a host of upgrades, of which the construction work will take just over a year to complete.

The terminal welcomes more than two million passengers each year and after the update, it will be ready to welcome the next generation of P&O Cruises ships due to arrive.

The line’s 5,200-guest Iona vessel will homeport in Southampton following its launch in May 2020 as the largest ship ever built for the British market.

She will be hosting sailings to the Norwegian Fjords with her design to maximise views and let the outside in.

ABP Southampton Director, Alastair Welch, said: “Cruise is a strong and growing industry.

“The ships that call in Southampton are increasing in size and we are investing significantly to accommodate future growth in the industry and to maintain our position as Northern Europe’s leading cruise port.

We are pleased to be breaking-ground on this important project with P&O Cruises.”

Carnival UK president Josh Weinstein commented on the announcement: “Today was an important step in preparing the Ocean Terminal for significant upgrades which will give our guests across all our brands as well as the smoothest, most efficient embarkation experience and the very best start to their holiday.”

2020 is due to be a big year for the port of Southampton with some big names due to arrive.

Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas will be returning to the UK and will be going on sale five months early (from November 20th 2018).

Celebrity’s second Edge-class ship, Celebrity Apex, will actually launch in Southampton in 2020! Her naming ceremony will take place here in the April, making it 10 years since the brand launched and operated a ship in the UK.
