Scenic Vs Emerald: Battle of the River Ships

With river cruising becoming ever more popular we thought we’d shine a spotlight on the Australian owned cruise lines Emerald Waterways and Scenic Tours. Confusingly they’re the same company, yet two entirely different brands – but don’t worry, the www.CRUISE.co.uk team are here to slice straight through that confusion, much like the proverbial Gordian Knot! Both lines are new to the industry, with Emerald only starting in 2014, whilst Scenic launched their European ships in 2008 but where do the similarities end? www.CRUISE.co.uk investigated which out of the two is the best river cruise line…   On-board entertainment Emerald have an amazing and unique feature in that their pool area can turn into a cinema at night! The floor lifts up out of the pool and seals over to become a comfy area of arm chairs to sit back and relax with a film. Don’t believe us? Then watch the video below… (Don’y worry – they drain the pool first!)   Emerald also have spa and beauty salon, mini golf on the top deck (Royal Caribbean eat your heart out!) and entertainment from local musicians and entertainers. Scenic Ships don’t all have a pool but entertainment on board includes a spa and Scenic Sundowners, (which is a cocktail reception as the sun goes down.) Bottoms up on those Margaritas! Oh – all the drinks are free on-board as well (bottoms...

We’ve been hearing unconfirmed leaks today that Carnival Corporation are set to make cruising history by placing the largest order of cruise ships ever! The rumour (information of which was believed to be put on hold due to the recent terrorist attack in Tunisia) is that ten new ships are to be ordered according to unconfirmed Italian media reports. The speculation suggests that orders will be placed equally between the Italian ship yard Fincantieri and Germany’s Meyer Werft. The orders will be signed by Mickey Arison, an Israeli-born American business man and chairman of Carnival Corporation. Each vessel will...

Valencia Falls In Popularity With Cruisers By A Fifth

According to a recent report released by the Spanish tourist board the port of Valencia is set to fall in popularity this year but they still expect Spain to break all records by welcoming 8.1 million cruise passengers in 2015!   The increase in passengers, up from 7.67 million last year, is reported to be thanks to an increased interest the Canary Islands amongst cruisers which are expected to see a rise this year of 30%!!!   The current boom in Spanish cruising has been helped massively by the ports of Las Palmas, Tenerife and Ferrol which have all compensated for the fall in popularity of Valencia after cruise activity there dropped by 21% in 2014.   For those worried about the increased numbers though you’ll be glad to know Carnival have already confirmed an investment in the port of Barcelona of €20 million in order to improve its facilities.   As it stands, the port of Barcelona (Spain’s third and Europe’s ninth largest container port) will maintain its Mediterranean leadership in cruising, helped no doubt by the twenty five cruises that have been planned by Royal Caribbean for their giant ship Allure Of The Seas and all of its 5,400 passengers.   Are you a fan of Spanish cruises? Are you one of the cruisers fed up of Valencia? Let us know you’re thoughts in the comments below!...

Phuket – Beyond the Beaches

If you’ve got the Thai island of Phuket on your cruise itinerary then brace yourself for a destination that’s a mass of contrasts and contradictions. You can munch on fried insects from a street vendor on Bangla Road whilst drinking out of a plastic bag, all the while looking at the Starbucks and McDonald’s across the street. You can be in the ultra-modern shopping and entertainment mall Central Festival one minute, then trekking through the jungle on elephant back the next and it’s perfectly possible to bump into a gaggle of sequined, high-heeled ladyboys whilst touring the temples and religious shrines. So you see, to simply go straight from port to the tourist magnet Patong Beach would be a real shame. Phuket has so much to experience that even a year’s worth of port stops wouldn’t be enough but here are some suggestions to get you off that sunlounger and exploring this hot, heady hotspot in the ‘Land of Smiles’: Big Buddha Even if you’re not in the slightest bit religious, the temples in Phuket are an incredible spectacle. One of the newest additions is the still work-in-progress Big Buddha, which sits high on the Nakkerd Hills (yep, you will be if you choose to hike up there!) and it’s pretty difficult to miss this gleaming white marble monument which measures in at 45 metres tall. Whether you’re feeling...
