A Closer Look at Quantum’s New SeaPlex

It’s hard to believe that with all of the bells and whistles that the new Quantum of the Seas has that there’s anything else that the ship can bring to the equation but there is! Not only can you skydive, see the world from the inside with Virtual Balconies, watch robots mix your drinks, dine dynamically and be lifted 300ft above sea level in the North Star Observatory pod, you can also play undercover in the new SeaPlex indoor space – an incredible sports and leisure venue that can morph into several different versions of fun, depending on the time of day. Sound cool? It really, really is! (Can you tell we’re excited?) Located on decks 15 and 16 of Quantum (and, quite likely, her sister ship, Anthem of the Seas – set for launch for Southampton sailings spring 2015, and the Ovation – to be released the following year), the SeaPlex complex is the leisure hub of the ship. One of the things that sets it apart from leisure zones on other ships is that, being undercover, SeaPlex isn’t weather dependant – a great plus for those who don’t want to play sport under blazing sunshine or if you’re planning a cruise when the weather isn’t guaranteed to be constantly good. To get an idea of what SeaPlex is all about, mix Carnival’s SportsSquare with the coolest teen...

The Future’s Quantum, The Future’s Robotic

Skydiving… An interchangeable SeaPlex games room… Virtual balconies for inside staterooms… Royal Caribbean have really outdone themselves with their brand spanking Quantum-class ship, Quantum of the Seas and reading all about it is making us VERY excited! Plus, if all that wasn’t enough, the ship has robots onboard too! No, we don’t mean the Terminator or Johnny 5 from Short Circuit but there’s definitely a bionic theme taking guests further into the future of cruising. To ensure that guests are entertained in innovative style Quantum is combining robotics with entertainers to create a cruising (and world) first. Situated in the Two70° lounge which can morph into whatever kind of venue it needs to be (using a pretty nifty 270° panorama and 18 projectors that can change the vista at the push of a button) the Robo show will provide guests with an unforgettable experience; something that not many people in the world will be able to say they’ve seen. Here www.CRUISE.co.uk takes a look at what these Roboscreens are all about……is Johnny 5 still alive?   The Bare Ro-Bones of the Concept Basically, the clever cruising big-wigs behind the Quantum of the Seas decided that installing robotic screens into one of their lounges would be just the thing to make passengers’ jaws drop during a dazzling evening event and by the looks of the sneak-peak videos, they were right....

Quantum’s Satellite Technology: Surfing the Net As Well as the Waves

If you’re travelling on-board Royal Caribbean’s’ new ship Quantum of the Seas (or her sister ship Anthem of the Seas, which will be cruising from Southampton next year) then you won’t have to put up with chugging internet connection reminiscent of the not-so-good old dial-up days, when you had to wait an age for a website to load (and had enough time to make a brew during the waiting time) because your browser couldn’t hack it.   Instead, you’ll be fortunate enough to enjoy bandwidth by the boatload (pun intended) – at speeds to rival on-land connections – so that not only can you post envy-inducing photos to Facebook and update your status with what you’ve been up to but you’ll also be able to stream videos via Netflix and the like; something that has been unheard of previously!   In 2013, the new partnership between Royal Caribbean and satellite provider O3B was piloted on-board the Oasis and the Allure, before getting a proper launch on Quantum of the Seas ‘SMARTship’, which doesn’t just boast super-fast Internet but also has an arsenal of gadgets and hi-tech gizmos to use it with.   The satellite technology used is ground-breaking and hugely exciting – and not just to the cruise or tech obsessed (who, us?).   It’s something that helps Quantum to speed ahead when it comes to innovation and tech...
