Top Five Pancakes of the World

Today is one of the most glorious days of the year; Shrove Tuesday, a day where a simple traditional recipe turns our kitchens into taste sensations, with a variety of flavours, fruits and treats centred around a world famous and iconic dish: the pancake. Are they dessert? Are they breakfast? That all really depends on what you decide to add, pancakes and fruit make a fine breakfast, while a dollop of ice cream makes a fine dessert. Or lunch. Or dinner. Or, hey, even a snack… The humble pancake has gone through many transformations as cultures on a global scale take the innocent fried snack and appropriate it to their own tastes, but which pancakes are you likely to find aboard your cruise? Well let’s take a look…   The British Pancake A large, very flat pancake, the British Pancake is one most of us would be familiar with. For many of us we have fond memories adding a squeeze of lemon juice and sugar – little bit of sour to mix with our sweet. Which, conveniently, sums up the British mantra nicely… The British Pancake is most definitely a P&O pancake – the line which proudly proclaims “British is Back” would scoff at the thought of adding something as sweet as ice cream.   The American Pancake Or should we say the “Pancake Stack.” Usually several, smaller and...

Seven of the Stupidest Things Ever to Happen on a Cruise

It’s okay to be new to cruising – everyone starts somewhere! No-one will laugh at you for asking questions and no-one minds if there are things you’re unsure of – but here are just a few stories about cruise passengers that raise a lot of questions for us, like “What were they thinking?”   1: Inside cabin with a sea view One thing you might learn in the service industry is that some people are impossible to please. On one certain cruise, the crew had quite the amusing/tedious time explaining to a passenger that her inside cabin could not have a window looking out to sea. For those not entirely versed in the ways of cruising, an inside cabin is – well – inside the ship, not touching the hull or outer walls of the vessel. As a result, being able to have a view of the sea would require tunnelling through the rooms of other guests – unless you’re on Royal Caribbean, where Virtual Balconies save the day. The woman was quite annoyed when staff told her that her inside cabin simply could not, and would not have a window. Despite this, she demanded a window be installed and when she finally calmed she simply explained that she expected “better service next time.”   2: Don’t drop the anchor… You don’t have to be an experienced sailor to...

The Ultimate Excursion Bucket List – Part One

Too often when we think of cruising we picture giant ships sailing the ocean; we think of the amazing restaurants or the elegant surroundings, we tend to think of the ship itself, not the exotic ports of call or the amazing things you can get up to whilst there! Quite often in fact the destinations are given short shrift. Cruise ships will call in at nearly every country on the planet (admittedly said country needs to have a coast line or at least a river to cruise along) but that gives cruisers the opportunity to enjoy some once in a life time places. At each port of call you arrive in you have the choice of either disembarking and doing your own thing or booking one of the cruise lines organised shore excursions. For the adventurous cruise fan however there’s a third step that can be taken. These are the shore excursions that you wouldn’t normally consider, the excursions that can be best described as dream shore experiences, never to be repeated. once in a lifetime opportunities! Below then is our top thirty three of the weirdest, wackiest or most unusual excursions on offer from the cruise lines around the world  that should be on every serious cruisers bucket list. Take a tour of the Game of Thrones set  The www.CRUISE.co.uk team may be revealing their inner geek here but...
