Man Falls Overboard & Survives For 22 Hours Before Carnival Perform ‘Nothing Short Of Miraculous’

A Norwegian Cruise Line crew member who went overboard near Cuba last Saturday was rescued 22 hours later by a Carnival ship.

“This is nothing short of miraculous,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

“Kudos to the Carnival Glory team for this amazing effort to rescue a fellow seafarer.”

Norwegian Getaway was 28 miles northwest of Pinar del Rio at around 3:20 pm Saturday when the ship told the U.S. Coast Guard that a 33-year-old crew member had been seen going overboard.

An HC-144 Ocean Sentry plane out of Miami began searching about 10 minutes later and the Getaway crew member was found alive and treading water around 1 p.m Sunday.

This was located around 21 miles north of Cuba where a Carnival Glory steward noticed the NCL crew member in the water, however in stable condition.

NCL Getaway, which left Miami June 24th for an eight-day cruise, returned to Miami Sunday whilst Carnival Glory headed for Cozumel, continuing its seven-day cruise.

“We are so happy to know that the individual is safe and will soon be reunited with friends and family,” said a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line stated in an email.

We are also extremely grateful to Carnival Cruise Line and send our deepest thanks to the crew of Carnival Glory.”
